In addition to the surprise announcement last week of the Audi 90 GTO, iRacing has added the Nissan GTP ZX-T to it's list of every growing cars and marks the first "historic" prototype to be added on the service.
The Nissan GTP ZX-T ran from 1985-1990 and was developed to compete in the premier GTP category in IMSA. Known for being the first car to defeat the well known and dominant Porsche 962, Nissan had one of the fastest cars in the series.
In the early years of the cars existence it was known and very unreliable which caused Nissan to only run a handful of races in the 1985 and 1986 seasons. In 1987, Nissan chose again to skip the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring to develop the car further. Making it's season debut on the streets of Miami, Nissan was able to claim it's maiden win defeating a Porsche 962 by eleven seconds. The remainder of 1987 was plagued again by mechanical issues for most of the season.
In 1988, Nissan expanded to a two car team however the second car was delayed because of accidents during practice. With a very successful season, Nissan was able to claim nine victories out of the fourteen rounds. However again skipping the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring hurt Nissan's ability to capture the constructors championship.
Wanting to overcome the misfortunes of the previous season Nissan chose to race both the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring in 1989. With a poor showing at Daytona due to reliability the team shocked the racing world with a two lap victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring. A total of ten victories in '89 allowed Nissan to capture the constructors championship the manufacture sot out for at the beginning of the year. With an aged car, 1990 marked the last season for the GTP ZX-T.
The Nissan will join the Audi in a new for iRacing official series called the Kamel-GT Championship. As with the original IMSA GT Championship that started back in the early 1970s, S4 on iRacing will put these cars on North American Tracks, some of which were used while the cars were in competition.
